#TomorrowsDiscoveries: Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Patrick Byrne, M.D.

When plastic surgeons like me
try to help patients who’ve suffered devastating injuries,
we use the materials at hand, usually tissue from another
part of the patient’s body. But this limits what we can do. But what if, instead,
we could induce the patient’s own body to regrow itself
to be as good as new? I’m Patrick Byrne, and
I and my colleagues, in the division of Facial Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery, are working with innovative
researchers here at Johns Hopkins on new ways to treat patients
with deformities and dysfunction. With new bio materials
under development, we hope to induce the patient’s own
immune systems to begin a process of true healing, not scarring, true
healing to regrow muscles, nerves, cartilage, and
even bone lost to cancer or injury. [MUSIC]
